Wedding cake pricing can feel like a bit of a mystery, you enquire, wait for a quote, and suddenly you're wondering how a cake could possibly cost that much. We get it. And we'd rather be upfront with you so you can plan with confidence and get excited about your cake rather than stressed about the budget.

The truth is, a wedding cake is one of those details that genuinely makes a difference on the day, it's photographed, it's the centrepiece, it's the moment your guests gather around. But it also doesn't have to break the bank if you know what to look for and what questions to ask.

Price Per Serve, What to Expect

Most professional cake makers price their cakes on a per-serve basis, which is then adjusted based on design complexity, fillings, and other details. It's a helpful way to compare quotes and understand what you're actually paying for.

As a general guide, you can expect to pay somewhere between $7 and $16 per serve from a professional cake designer. Where your cake lands within that range will depend on how many serves you need, the style and complexity of the design, your chosen flavour and filling combinations, and any specialty finishes.

Coffee vs dessert serves: Wedding cake is typically served in either a coffee portion (1 × 1 inch) or a dessert portion (1 × 2 inch). Coffee portions are half the size, which means you get roughly double the serves from the same cake, a simple way to stretch your budget without compromising on what's on the table.

At the lower end of that range you're looking at something relatively simple, a beautifully finished buttercream cake with minimal decoration. At the higher end, you're getting into intricate designs, handcrafted details, specialty flavours, and the kind of finish that genuinely looks extraordinary in photos. Both can be stunning. It just depends on what matters most to you.

As a rough guide, most couples spend somewhere between $400 and $900 on their wedding cake, though this varies depending on guest count, design complexity, and the style of cake. Some spend less with a simpler single-tier design, and some spend more for something truly elaborate. Either way, we'll always work with you to find the right fit.

What Affects the Cost of Your Cake

There's no single answer to "how much does a wedding cake cost?" because so many things influence the final price. Understanding these factors will help you make decisions that work for your budget without compromising on what matters most.

Size & number of serves

This is the biggest factor. More guests means more cake, and more cake means a higher price. Our guide to choosing the right cake size is a great place to start, getting the sizing right means you're not over-ordering and paying for cake that doesn't get eaten.

Design & decoration

A smooth buttercream finish with minimal decoration is going to sit at a very different price point to a cake with hand-piped details, intricate textures, fresh florals, or elaborate styling. The more time a design takes, the more it costs, and rightly so. That said, some of our most breathtaking cakes are also among the more simple in terms of decoration. A beautifully executed minimalist cake is every bit as impressive as an elaborate one.

Flavour & filling combinations

Our base flavours are all similarly priced, but certain fillings, particularly our homemade curds, ganaches and cookie dough, do involve more time and premium ingredients. It's a small addition to the overall price but worth knowing about. We'll always be upfront about this in your quote.

Ingredients

We use quality ingredients because we genuinely believe you can taste the difference. We're not cutting corners with what goes into your cake, and that's reflected in the price. A wedding cake made with great butter, real vanilla, and quality chocolate is going to taste worlds apart from one that isn't. Your guests will notice.

On-site assembly

Some of our cakes, including our long rectangle cakes and certain tiramisu formats, are assembled and finished on-site at your venue. This requires additional time and travel beyond standard delivery and is factored into your quote. We'll always flag this clearly so there are no surprises.

"A wedding cake isn't just dessert, it's a moment, a memory, and a centrepiece. Getting it right is worth every cent."

Every cake, big or small, deserves to arrive and look its absolute best

Delivery, Why It Matters More Than You Think

We'll be honest with you: we strongly recommend having your wedding cake professionally delivered. Every time. Here's why.

Your cake has been carefully constructed, layered, and decorated to look its absolute best. Transporting it, even across town, is a skill in itself. Uneven roads, sudden braking, summer heat, any of these can cause a cake to shift, slide, or soften in ways that are genuinely heartbreaking on a wedding day. A professional who knows how to pack, transport, and set up a cake properly is not an optional extra. It's peace of mind.

Think about this: You've invested $400, $600, maybe more into your wedding cake. It's going to be photographed. It's going to be the centrepiece of your reception. Do you really want to hand that responsibility to a well-meaning family member who's also trying to get dressed and make it to the ceremony on time?

What about single tier cakes?

A single tier cake is more manageable than a multi-tiered one, and we understand that pick-up might feel like a reasonable option for something smaller. But even then, consider the photos. Your cake is going to be photographed at your wedding. After the florist, the dress, and the venue, the cake is one of the first things people notice in those images. A cake that's arrived in perfect condition, set up on a stand with care, will look entirely different to one that's been transported in the back of a car. We want your cake to look as good as it tastes, and delivery is part of how we make that happen.

Our delivery fees

We're based in Caringbah and travel up to three hours to deliver. Our minimum delivery fee is $50, and the cost increases with distance. We'll always include this in your quote so you know exactly what to expect, no surprises on the invoice. If your venue requires on-site assembly, additional time is also factored in.

And because we know weddings don't always go exactly to plan, we bring an emergency kit to every delivery. Extra buttercream, piping bags and tips, palette knives, and spare decorations come with us every single time. Just in case. It's one of those things we hope we never need to use, but we're always glad we have it.

Catering for Dietary Requirements

Gluten-free guests are more common than ever, and we think it's a really lovely touch to make sure everyone at your wedding gets to enjoy something sweet, not just the people who can eat whatever they like.

We offer gluten-free cake options in Vanilla, Vanilla Raspberry and Chocolate. An additional cost applies for these due to the specialty ingredients required, but they taste genuinely wonderful and your gluten-free guests will appreciate being thought of.

A nice idea: If you only have one or two gluten-free guests, you don't necessarily need the whole cake to be gluten-free. Consider adding a small batch of gluten-free cupcakes as a thoughtful extra, it's a lovely way to make sure everyone feels included without impacting your overall cake size or budget significantly.

When you fill out your enquiry form, let us know about any dietary requirements upfront and we'll factor this into your quote and our preparation process.

Is a Wedding Cake Worth the Investment?

We might be a little biased, but yes, we genuinely think so. And here's why.

Your wedding cake is one of the few parts of your day that gets its own dedicated moment. The cutting, the photos, the guests gathering around, it's a ritual that punctuates the celebration. And unlike the flowers that wilt or the food that disappears, the photos of your cake are forever. That matters.

A well-made cake from a baker who cares, one that looks incredible, tastes even better, and arrives in perfect condition, is something your guests will talk about. We've had couples tell us that their tiramisu was the most talked-about part of their reception. We've had guests reach out after the wedding to order cakes of their own. That kind of impression is genuinely priceless.

If budget is a real concern, there are smart ways to get the most from your investment, choosing coffee portions over dessert, opting for a simpler design with beautiful ingredients, or pairing a smaller display cake with a kitchen slab. We'd always rather help you find the right option for your budget than have you go without something you love.

Our best advice: Be upfront with your cake maker about your budget from the very first conversation. A good baker will work with you, not against you. We'd much rather know your budget early and design something beautiful within it than quote you something you can't afford and lose you entirely.
